Municipal wastewater is remarkably consistent, which is why treatment designs transfer from one town to the next. Industrial waste is not. The same factory can produce a mildly alkaline rinse water on Monday and an acidic, solvent-bearing batch dump on Thursday, and the composition changes again when production changes. Characterise the envelope - minimum and maximum pH, temperature, chloride, oil, solvent and solids including upset conditions - and specify the coating and construction against those extremes. Where the swings are large, an equalisation tank upstream is usually the most effective protection for every vessel downstream.
It suits a very wide range because the fired glass surface is inert rather than pH-optimised, and because it is impermeable where chlorides are present.
