Water Tanks with Customized Coating: Specifying the System, Not the Colour

Customised coating is usually requested as if it were a finish question - a colour, a brand, a product name. In practice it is a specification question, because a water tank is not one environment. The immersed wall, the vapour space above the water, the floor where grit settles, and the outside of the shell all present different demands, and a single coating applied everywhere is either wasteful below the waterline or under-protected above it.

Specifying by zone is the approach that works, and it starts from the water analysis rather than from a product datasheet. Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. 1. When Does a Standard Coating Stop Being Enough?

A default specification is fine for clean, temperate, potable duty in a mild climate. Move to a customised system when any of the following applies, because each of them changes the demand on the coating in a specific way.

  • Elevated or Cycling Temperature: Warm water accelerates chemical attack and thermal cycling flexes the shell, which loads the bond between coating and steel rather than the coating itself.
  • Extremes of pH: Water outside the neutral band - acidic raw water, softened water, some process streams - narrows the range a coating can tolerate. Confirm against the actual value, not a category.
  • Chlorides: Brackish water, coastal sites and some industrial streams introduce chlorides, which attack stainless and drive blistering under organic films.
  • Abrasion and Suspended Solids: Grit, sand and suspended solids wear the floor and the lower wall. Where they are present, hardness becomes as important as chemical resistance.
  • Aggressive Cleaning Regimes: Frequent chemical or high-pressure cleaning imposes a duty of its own. The coating has to tolerate the cleaning method as well as the water.
2. How Do You Specify a Coating by Zone?

Divide the tank into the environments it actually contains and give each one what it needs. On a water tank the vapour space is usually the most demanding zone, not the immersed wall, because that is where condensation, gases and temperature cycling meet.

  • Vapour Space and Roof: Two-coat-two-fire as a minimum, holiday tested at 1500 V. This zone sees condensation and any gases released from the water, and it is where attack concentrates.
  • Immersed Wall: Two-coat-one-fire at roughly 210-430 microns tested at 900 V is often adequate where the water is clean and temperate, which avoids over-specifying the largest area.
  • Floor and Abrasion Zone: Specify hardness and arrange the outlet so that grit travels the shortest possible distance across the plate during discharge and cleaning.
  • External Surface: Match the external system to the atmosphere - coastal salt, industrial pollution, freeze-thaw - and pay particular attention to the splash zone at the base.
  • Seams and Penetrations: Sealant chemistry and bolt grade belong in the coating specification. The coating protects the plate and the sealant protects the joint.
3. Which Approvals Apply and How Is the Result Verified?

Two independent requirements apply to a potable water tank, and they are frequently confused with each other. One concerns the effect of the material on the water; the other concerns the effect of the water on the material.

  • Product Contact Approval: NSF/ANSI 61 or WRAS depending on the market. This is a health effect standard covering what the material contributes to the water - it says nothing about corrosion resistance.
  • Coating System Standard: ISO 28765 for glass-fused-to-steel, which covers the coating system itself and how it is tested and applied.
  • Chemical Compatibility: Confirm against the actual water analysis at the actual temperature and concentration. This is the requirement that approvals do not cover.
