A continuously stirred tank reactor looks like the simplest anaerobic digester to specify, because there is only one vessel and the concept is easy to state: keep everything in suspension and the biology will look after itself. In practice CSTR plants are where operators most often discover that mixing was treated as an accessory rather than as the design. Undersized or badly placed mixers create dead volume, dead volume becomes grit and scum, and the usable reactor is quietly smaller than the tank that was paid for.
The failure mode is slow and expensive, which is why it is worth getting right at the specification stage. Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel) builds glass-fused-to-steel CSTR digesters with mixer penetrations, heating and access engineered into the shell, so the mixing system and the vessel are designed as one.
A CSTR aims for uniform conditions throughout the vessel. Feed is diluted to a pumpable consistency and mixed back into the bulk, so the biology sees the same environment everywhere. That uniformity is what makes the reactor controllable - and what makes it sensitive to mixing failure.
Specify mixing by what it must achieve rather than by motor power. The useful measures are turnover, power input per unit volume, and the demonstrable absence of settled and floating layers over the whole operating range.
Mixing is the largest single factor, but a CSTR that mixes well can still be destabilised by heating, feeding or gas handling. Stability is a system property, and the tank has to support all of it.
| Design Parameter | Typical Range | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total solids | 8-12 percent for pumped complete-mix feedstock | Above this range mixing power rises steeply and pumping becomes difficult |
| Retention time | 20-40 days depending on substrate and temperature | Sets the reactor volume for a given daily feed rate |
| Operating temperature | Mesophilic 35-38 C or thermophilic 50-55 C | Drives reaction rate and the tolerance for disturbance |
| Mixing provision | Power input per cubic metre and a stated blending time | Determines whether all of the paid-for volume is actually reacting |
| Feed frequency | Frequent small charges rather than large slugs | Reduces organic load shocks that destabilise the biology |
Every tank delivered by Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel) is engineered against AWWA D103-09 and EN 1090 with finite element verification of shell, roof and nozzle loads, fused at 820-930°C under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 control, holiday tested at 1500 V across one hundred percent of the surface, and assembled with Grade 8.8 bolts and manufacturer-certified sealant. CSTR digesters are supplied as complete reactors: glass-fused-to-steel shell fused at 820-930 degrees Celsius, mixer penetrations and supports integrated into the shell design, heating circuits or heat exchanger connections, gas-tight roof with safety devices, insulation and cladding, instrumentation, and access and safety provisions matched to the maintenance regime.
Specify it as power input per cubic metre together with a blending time, rather than as motor rating. The required figure depends on the total solids content and on the flow pattern the mixer produces, and it must be met at the thickest consistency the plant will actually feed - not at water-like conditions.
A CSTR is designed for uniform conditions throughout, which suits pumpable feedstock at 8-12 percent solids and gives good flexibility for co-digestion. Plug flow designs handle higher solids material that moves through the vessel with limited back-mixing, and are chosen more for manure-heavy or stackable feedstock.
Scum forms where surface velocity is too low to keep floating material entrained. Control starts with mixer selection and placement, is supported by surface spray or mechanical breakers, and is most effectively solved by addressing the feedstock balance that produces the floating fraction in the first place.
Yes. Volume, coating grade by zone, mixer type and placement, heating arrangement, roof and gas handling, insulation, instrumentation and access are all configured to the feedstock analysis, the operating temperature and the site conditions, and confirmed before manufacture.
