Sludge is not wastewater with more solids in it. It is a different material: it settles, it stratifies, it generates gas, it goes septic between draws, and the gas it generates turns into sulphuric acid on any surface above the liquid line. Tanks that perform acceptably on raw sewage have been known to fail within a few years on sludge, and the failure is almost always located in the vapour space rather than below the waterline. Procurement teams that buy sludge tanks on the same specification they use for sewage tanks inherit that failure, and it surfaces long after the supplier has been paid.

2. What Should You Audit at an Enamel Tank Supplier?

Each one is verifiable, and a supplier who cannot produce evidence for all four is asking you to accept risk on their behalf.

  • Furnace Temperature Control: Genuine glass-fused-to-steel is fired at 820-930 degrees Celsius. Ask for furnace records, not a brochure statement. Below that range the frit does not fuse and the result behaves like a thick paint.
  • Holiday Test Coverage: Insist on one hundred percent surface coverage at 1500 V for two-coat-two-fire and three-coat-three-fire systems, with the test voltage and coverage stated in the inspection and test plan.

  • Bolted Joint Design: Grade 8.8 bolts, manufacturer-certified sealant, and controlled bolt torque sequence matter more on a gas-tight sludge tank than on any other application because the joint is the leak path.
  • Comparable Reference Scale: Ask for sludge installations of similar diameter and age, and ask for one you can contact. Storage capacity references do not demonstrate sludge performance.

3. How Does Fused Enamel Resist Hydrogen Sulphide?

The fired glass layer is inert to the reduced sulphur compounds and to the sulphuric acid that forms from them, and because the bond to the steel is metallurgical, acid attacking a scratch cannot creep sideways beneath the coating. Both properties are needed: chemical inertia alone would not stop undercutting at a damaged point.

  • Chemical Inertia: The fired vitreous surface does not react with H2S, with elemental sulphur, or with the dilute sulphuric acid that forms on damp surfaces above the liquid line.

  • Sealant Compatibility: The joint sealant must be rated for sulphide service. A coating that survives H2S is pointless if the sealant in every horizontal seam degrades.
