Sludge is treated as a single category in most tank specifications, and it is not one. Primary sludge from a municipal primary clarifier, waste activated sludge from an aeration basin, digested sludge leaving an anaerobic digester, and an industrial sludge carrying metals or solvents are four different materials with four different storage behaviours. They differ in dry solids, in how quickly they turn septic, in how much grit they carry, and in what the vapour space above them contains. A supplier who quotes all four from the same drawing is not engineering; they are pricing.

Five characteristics drive the specification. Two sludges with identical volumes can need materially different tanks, and the difference is usually visible in the enquiry data if anyone asks for it.
Coating grade follows the zone, and the zone follows the chemistry. Selecting one grade for the whole vessel either over-protects the immersed floor or under-protects the vapour space, and the second error is the expensive one.
On a bolted sludge tank the coating protects the plate and the sealant protects the seam, and the seam is where the gas escapes. A perfectly specified coating with an incompatible sealant produces an odourous tank with an intact lining, which is a difficult problem to explain to a neighbourhood.
