1. What Does NSF/ANSI 61 Cover, and What Does It Not?

2. Which Water Treatment Chemicals Fall Inside It?

In practice, the tanks at a water plant that need NSF/ANSI 61 are those holding chemicals destined for potable dosing, plus the potable water storage itself. Tanks holding maintenance chemicals, fuels or process waste do not.

  • Coagulants and Flocculants: Aluminium sulphate, ferric chloride and polyaluminium chloride are dosed into potable water, so their storage and dosing tanks sit within the drinking water system.
  • Disinfectants: Sodium hypochlorite and chlorine solutions contact drinking water directly. The storage tank is in scope, and chemical compatibility at storage concentration must be verified separately from NSF 61 status.

3. How Should a Chemical Holding Tank Be Specified?

  • State Both Requirements: Name NSF/ANSI 61 for the wetted surface and separately state the chemical, concentration range and maximum storage temperature for compatibility assessment.
  • Confirm the Coating System: Glass-fused-to-steel covers pH 3 to 11 as standard with 1 to 14 available on special specification. Fusion bonded epoxy suits a different envelope. Match the system to the chemical, not to habit.
