When a thermal energy storage vessel is pressurized and destined for a market that enforces ASME, the procurement conversation changes from 'a tank' to 'a coded pressure vessel'. ASME Section VIII and the U-stamp carry legal and safety weight, and buyers must verify them rather than trust a line on a brochure. This article is the buyer's checklist.
An ASME-certified TES vessel is a pressure vessel built and stamped to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, with a U-stamp from a holder of the ASME certification. Buyers must verify the stamp, the applicable division, the design conditions, and the nameplate - because the stamp is a regulated claim, not a marketing adjective. Confirm certification scope with the supplier before order.
Section VIII governs the design, fabrication, inspection, and stamping of pressure vessels. Division 1 is the common rule set for most TES vessels; it defines design pressure, joint efficiency, inspection, and the U-stamp requirement for stamped vessels. A TES vessel that is pressurized in an ASME-enforcing market typically falls here.
The U-stamp means the vessel was built by an organization holding ASME certification and inspected by an authorized inspector, with a nameplate and data report. It is a regulated mark; only certified holders may apply it. If a supplier cannot show a valid U-stamp and data report, treat the vessel as non-ASME regardless of adjectives.
Before you buy, verify the certificate number and scope, the applicable division and edition of the code, the design pressure and temperature, the nameplate and U-1 data report, and the authorized inspector sign-off. We have pressure-vessel build experience (Malta carbon-steel vessel, 2026) and will confirm the exact ASME scope with you per project rather than assume a stamp.
Where the tank is atmospheric, or the market does not enforce ASME, a non-code bolted tank built to AWWA D103-09 or ISO 28765 may be the correct, lower-cost choice. Do not pay for a stamp you do not need, but do not skip it where the code applies.
Center Enamel builds bolted and welded water and pressure vessels with coated linings and has pressure-vessel project experience. We are explicit that ASME stamping is confirmed per project scope - we will not claim a U-stamp unless it is verified for your order. The Malta vessel (2026) is one of our coded-pressure references.
| Claim | What to verify |
|---|---|
| ASME certified | Certificate + scope |
| U-stamp | Nameplate + U-1 report |
| Design conditions | Pressure + temperature |
| Inspection | Authorized inspector sign-off |
The design, fabrication, inspection, and stamping of pressure vessels; Division 1 is the usual rule set for TES vessels.
A valid certificate held by the builder, an authorized inspector sign-off, and a nameplate with a U-1 data report - not just the word 'ASME' on a brochure.
When the vessel is pressurized and the market enforces ASME. Atmospheric tanks or non-enforcing markets may use AWWA D103-09 or ISO 28765 instead.
No - the U-stamp is a regulated mark. If a supplier cannot show certificate, nameplate, and data report, treat the vessel as non-ASME.
We have pressure-vessel build experience (e.g. the Malta carbon-steel vessel, 2026) and confirm the exact ASME scope and stamp per project rather than assuming it.
Only where the code applies. An unneeded stamp adds cost; a non-code AWWA/ISO tank is correct for many atmospheric TES duties.
For TES vessels, ASME is a regulated claim, not a marketing label. Section VIII Division 1 and the U-stamp signal a certified builder, an authorized inspector, and a documented data report - and buyers must verify all of it: certificate, scope, design conditions, nameplate, and sign-off. Where the code does not apply, a non-stamped AWWA or ISO tank is the right, lower-cost choice. Confirm the stamp per project; never assume it.
Suggested CTA: If your TES vessel requires ASME, send us the design pressure, temperature, and market, and we will confirm certification scope and provide the verification documents before you order.
