Cooling towers reject most of a data center's heat, and they consume water through evaporation, drift, and blowdown. Behind every tower is a water storage strategy: a make-up tank to cover evaporation and outages, a basin sized for pump suction, and a blowdown path to control concentration. This article covers the storage side of the condenser loop.
For a data center cooling tower, the storage tank is mainly a make-up tank that replaces evaporated, drifted, and blown-down water and buffers against supply interruption. Size it from the tower's water balance (evaporation plus drift plus blowdown) and from your site's supply reliability, not from cooling capacity alone.
A cooling tower loses water three ways. Evaporation scales with heat rejected; drift is tiny entrained droplets; blowdown is intentional bleed to cap dissolved solids. Make-up must equal the sum. The make-up tank then covers the lag between demand and municipal or well supply, plus outages.
Make-up volume per day is roughly the evaporation rate plus drift plus blowdown. The tank should hold enough to ride through supply interruptions and startup. A site with reliable supply may need only a few hours of make-up; a remote site needs more. The Saudi NEOM temporary water supply (2024, up to 6,000 m3 per tank) shows how make-up storage is staged for a large camp.
The cold basin under the tower is the suction reservoir; its volume must avoid pump cavitation and short-cycling of the make-up valve. A separate bolted make-up tank upstream smooths supply. Coated steel resists the warm, often chemically treated condenser water.
| Element | Role | Design note |
|---|---|---|
| Cold basin | Pump suction reservoir | Avoid cavitation, size for drawdown |
| Make-up tank | Buffer supply gap | Hours of loss by reliability |
| Blowdown path | Control concentration | Bleed to drain or reclaim |
Condenser water is warm and chemically treated, so the tank lining must resist both. GFS and FBE linings are proven in continuously wet, treated service; the Italy Sardinia warm water storage tank (2025, 1,200 m3, enamel roof) is a coated tank built for a warm water duty. Stainless suits smaller, high-purity draws.
Center Enamel supplies bolted GFS and FBE tanks for process and cooling water, shipped as panels for site erection. From a 1,200 m3 warm-water tank in Italy to staged 6,000 m3 units in Saudi Arabia, the same system serves condenser-loop storage.
Base it on daily evaporation plus drift plus blowdown, then add hours of buffer for your supply reliability. Do not size it from cooling tons alone.
Blowdown is the controlled bleed that caps dissolved solids. You do not store blowdown, but the make-up tank must replace it along with evaporation and drift.
GFS or FBE for warm, treated condenser water; stainless for small high-purity draws. The lining must resist continuous wet, chemical service.
Yes. The cold basin is the suction reservoir under the tower; the make-up tank is upstream and buffers supply gaps. Both matter.
A roof limits debris, sunlight, and algae. Coated, roofed bolted tanks are standard for treated cooling water.
Bolted panel tanks suit phased build-out; staged 6,000 m3-class units have been supplied for large temporary water programs.
Cooling tower water storage is a water-balance problem before it is a cooling problem. Size the make-up tank from evaporation, drift, and blowdown plus your site's supply reliability, protect the pump with a properly sized cold basin, and line the tank for warm, treated water. Bolted coated tanks make the storage practical to deliver and expand as the data center grows.
