Customized Biogas Storage Tanks: Options, Sizing, and Export Logistics

Biogas projects rarely fit a catalog. Feedstock, retention time, gas pressure and site geometry all push a digester toward a custom configuration, and the digester has to arrive on another continent in one piece. This article lays out the options a buyer can actually specify and what a competent exporter handles so the tank goes together on site without surprises.

Biogas digester volume follows the process: feedstock volume, solids content and hydraulic retention time (HRT), typically 20-40 days for mesophilic digestion at 35-38C. The tank is then sized to that retention, not to a standard diameter. A modular bolted shell lets the diameter and height be tuned to the available footprint.

The digester shell is usually a sealed GFS tank; the biogas is stored either as headspace pressure under a fixed roof or in a double-membrane gas holder sized for 5-30 mbar operating pressure. The choice depends on gas yield and whether you want pressure storage or a separate holder. Both interface with the same bolted shell.

GFS is the default for the digester because the inert glass face resists the acidic, H2S-laden environment. Where the feed or digestate is especially aggressive, stainless (SS304/316L) sections or a fully stainless tank is specified. The coating and the bolts must survive both the liquid and the gas phase.
