A bolted water tank arrives on site as flat panels, but it leaves the factory as a controlled, coated, inspected product - and that factory stage is where tank quality is won or lost. Understanding the production line helps a buyer ask the right questions and separate a real manufacturer from a trader. This article walks through how bolted GFS and FBE tanks are actually made.
A bolted water storage tank is made in stages: steel plate is cut and drilled, the panel is coated (enamel frit sprayed and fired at 820-930C for GFS, or Fusion-Bonded Epoxy for FBE), then 100% holiday-tested at 1500 V, traceably numbered, and crated for export. The factory's control of the coating line and the furnace - not the assembly in the field - is what decides whether the tank lasts. A credible factory shows you the line, the firing curve and the test records.
Production starts with certified steel plate, cut and drilled to the panel pattern. The bolt holes, stiffeners and edge details are machined so panels align in the field. Traceability begins here: each panel is numbered to a batch for later QA and any defect investigation.
For GFS, enamel frit is applied to the panel and fired in a furnace at 820-930C, fusing a glass layer (0.25-0.45 mm per face) to the steel. For FBE, epoxy powder is electrostatically applied and cured as a cross-linked coating. Both are factory-controlled - far more consistent than field spraying.
Every coated panel gets a 100% 1500 V holiday (spark) test to find pinholes, and the results are tied to the panel number. Panels are then crated for ocean freight with bolt kits and assembly drawings. A factory that cannot show the holiday record is not controlling its own line.
| Stage | Control |
|---|---|
| Cut & drill | Certified plate, numbered. |
| Coat & fire | 820-930C (GFS) / FBE cure. |
| Holiday test | 1500 V, 100% surface. |
| Crating | Seaworthy, with drawings. |
The proof of a factory is what it has already shipped: Italy Sardinia (30,549 m3 GFS, 2025), Namibia (six 11,230 m3 tanks, 2022) and Indonesia Cilincing (21,088 m3, 2024) are all outputs of the same integrated bolted-tank production base.
Center Enamel's integrated plant covers steel, enameling and FBE coating, with furnace-temperature control, 100% 1500 V holiday testing and panel traceability, then crates complete bolted assemblies for export - the factory stage where tank quality is actually set.
Enamel frit is sprayed on the steel panel and fired at 820-930C, fusing a glass layer (0.25-0.45 mm per face) to the metal.
A 100% surface 1500 V holiday (spark) test finds every pinhole; results are tied to the panel number.
No - the lining is applied in the factory where quality is controllable; the field only bolts panels together.
Numbered panels, bolt kits, assembly drawings, coating/holiday records, and seaworthy crating.
A few degrees outside the 820-930C window under- or over-fires the enamel and weakens the bond - the curve is the real quality document.
A credible manufacturer welcomes audits and can show the line, the firing curve and the test records.
A bolted water tank's quality is set in the factory, not the field: certified plate, a controlled coating line, an 820-930C fuse (or FBE cure), and a 100% holiday test with traceable panels. Visit the line, see the curve and the records, and you will know exactly what you are buying.
