The Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor is a high-rate anaerobic technology that treats strong wastewater while producing biogas - and its performance lives or dies in the tank design. The reactor must retain a dense granular sludge blanket, distribute feed evenly from the bottom, and capture the biogas released within the blanket, all without mechanical mixing. Get the geometry and internals right and the UASB outperforms far larger reactors; get them wrong and the sludge washes out and the gas escapes.
