Engineering specifications frequently use two names for the same technology. Glass lined steel (GLS) and glass-fused-to-steel (GFS) describe the same product: a steel panel with a glass enamel coating fused into the substrate at furnace temperature. The terminology split causes real problems in procurement, because a buyer comparing quotations may not realise that a GLS specification and a GFS proposal are the same technology, while a supplier quoting an epoxy or painted system to a GLS specification is offering something fundamentally different. Across water, wastewater, biogas, and industrial projects, that confusion is resolved the same way — by understanding what the fusion process actually produces and why it behaves differently from any applied coating.
Glass lined steel tanks are manufactured by applying enamel to a prepared steel panel and firing it at 820-930 °C, at which temperature the glass melts and bonds metallurgically with the steel. The result is a composite: the strength of steel with the chemical inertness of glass, and an interface that cannot delaminate because it no longer exists as an interface. Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel) has produced glass-fused-to-steel tanks since becoming China's first GFS manufacturer, with enameling research, close to 200 enameling patents, and systems delivered to more than 100 countries.
The panel is surface-prepared, coated with enamel slip, dried, and fired at 820-930 °C. At that temperature the glass melts and chemically bonds with the steel surface, forming a composite layer. Coats may be applied once, twice, or three times depending on the duty, which is what the 2C1F, 2C2F, and 3C3F designations describe.
The advantage of a factory-manufactured system is that performance is testable before the tank ever reaches site. Every panel is electrically tested for coating continuity, adhesion and hardness are measured against defined values, and the governing standard ISO 28765 sets out the requirements for glass-lined bolted steel tanks used in water and wastewater service.
Glass lined steel is the preferred choice wherever the stored liquid is chemically aggressive, where service life must be long with minimal intervention, or where the surface must not interact with the contents. It is less compelling only where the duty is mild and first cost dominates, or where the liquid is outside the coating's pH envelope.
