A biogas holder spends its life doing almost nothing, which is exactly why it is neglected. It holds gas at a few tens of millibar, it flexes slightly, and nothing appears to happen - until a flame arrester blocks with condensate and dust, a vacuum breaker seizes, or a membrane develops a small tear that nobody notices until the gas analysis changes. The failure modes are slow, mechanical and entirely preventable with a maintenance regime that costs very little.
Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel) supplies biogas storage with the safety train as part of the design, and we hand over an inspection schedule with it - because a safety device that has never been tested is not a safety device.
Four things, in order of how often they occur. Blockage: condensate, dust and, in cold weather, ice collect in low points, in water seals and in flame arresters, and a blocked arrester turns an over-pressure event into a rupture. Vacuum: withdrawing gas faster than the make-up or air admission can replace it collapses a low-pressure holder, and collapse happens much faster than over-pressure relief. Leakage: membranes age, sealants harden, and joints relax - low-pressure leaks are hard to detect without a leak survey. And corrosion: hydrogen sulphide and condensate make the gas space a corrosive environment, particularly where the gas is wet and the desulphurisation is not doing its job.
Five items, each with a real inspection task. The flame arrester must be inspected and cleaned on a schedule - quarterly is common, more often in dusty or freezing conditions - because its element blocks. The water seal or liquid relief must have its level checked and topped up, and must be protected from freezing where that is a risk. The vacuum breaker must be function-tested, not just looked at, and sized for the maximum withdrawal rate. The pressure relief must be verified as lifting at its set point. And gas detection - methane and hydrogen sulphide - must be calibrated on the manufacturer's interval, because an uncalibrated detector reads zero whether the atmosphere is safe or not.
It should say what to check, how often, what the acceptance limits are, and what to do when something is out of limits - in that order of specificity. 'Inspect the flame arrester regularly' is not an instruction. 'Remove, inspect and clean the flame arrester element every three months; replace if the element is corroded or distorted; record the date and the condition' is. The manual should also carry the gas composition the tank was designed for, including the hydrogen sulphide content, the working pressure range, the maximum fill and withdrawal rates, the confined-space entry procedure, and the leak survey method and interval. Confined-space entry into a biogas holder is a permitted, controlled operation - never an informal one.

Every tank delivered by Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel) is engineered against AWWA D103-09 and EN 1090 with finite element verification of shell, roof and nozzle loads, fused at 820-930°C under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 control, holiday tested at 1500 V across one hundred percent of the surface, and assembled with Grade 8.8 bolts and manufacturer-certified sealant. Biogas storage is handed over with the safety train documented - flame arrester, liquid relief, vacuum breaker, pressure relief and gas detection provisions - together with an inspection schedule, the design gas composition and pressure range, the maximum fill and withdrawal rates, a confined-space entry procedure and a leak survey method.
A biogas holder does almost nothing for years at a time, which is why the devices that protect it have to be exercised on a calendar rather than on a feeling.
Commonly quarterly, and more frequently where the gas is dusty, where condensate is heavy or where freezing is possible. The element is a fine mesh and it blocks; a blocked arrester converts an over-pressure event into a rupture, which is why it is the highest priority item on the list. Record each inspection with the condition found so that a trend in blockage rate becomes visible.
Because a low-pressure holder is designed to hold a few tens of millibar of positive pressure and has very little resistance to negative pressure. If gas is withdrawn faster than it can be replaced - a pump left running, a blocked make-up line, a closed valve - the vessel collapses in seconds. The vacuum breaker must be sized for the maximum withdrawal rate and function-tested, not just visually checked.
Not by listening. Low-pressure leaks are found with a leak survey - a portable gas detector traced around joints, seals, membrane penetrations and instrument connections, ideally on a calm day - supplemented by pressure decay testing where the vessel can be isolated. Regular surveys find small leaks while they are still cheap to fix and before they become a safety issue.
