Two tanks can leave two factories with the same nominal description - glass lined steel, bolted, 0.3 mm coating - and have service lives that differ by twenty years. The difference is not in the specification sheet; it is in the furnace, the firing curve, the steel preparation before the coating goes on, and whether anyone tested the finished plate. Enameling is a high-temperature metallurgical bonding process, and like every such process it is controlled by parameters that a brochure will never show you.

You are buying a fusion bond, not a covering. A glass coating is applied to prepared steel and fired at roughly 820-930 degrees Celsius until the glass melts and bonds to the substrate, producing a composite in which the coating cannot undercut or peel the way a liquid-applied lining can. Everything that determines quality happens around that firing: how the steel is cleaned and prepared, what the furnace atmosphere and temperature uniformity are, how long the plate dwells at temperature, how it cools, and whether the result is tested. Change any one of these and the coating still looks correct when it leaves the factory.
Four measurable, testable numbers: thickness, holiday test voltage, adhesion and hardness. Finished thickness typically falls in the range of 0.25-0.45 mm, verified by gauge. Holiday testing is performed across the full surface - commonly at 1500 V - to find discontinuities that the eye will not see. Adhesion is measured, with values around 3450 N/cm2 indicating a proper fusion bond. Hardness around 6.0 Mohs places the surface well above organic linings and explains its resistance to abrasion and cleaning. A provider who can state all four, and show the records for your plates, is making a different offer from one who can only state one.
Look at the furnace, the preparation line, the test bench and the reject pile - in that order. The furnace tells you the capability: type, size, temperature uniformity records and how many plates per day it can actually fire. The preparation line tells you whether contamination is controlled. The test bench tells you whether the stated numbers are really measured. The reject pile is the most honest thing in the factory: a plant that re-fires or rejects a visible fraction of its output is exercising control, while a plant with a perfect record and no rework area is usually not measuring. Ask also what happens to a plate that fails - re-fired, patched, or scrapped - because the answer defines the quality system.

(Center Enamel) is engineered against AWWA D103-09 and EN 1090 with finite element verification of shell, roof and nozzle loads, fused at 820-930°C under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 control, holiday tested at 1500 V across one hundred percent of the surface, and assembled with Grade 8.8 bolts and manufacturer-certified sealant. Enameling quality is not a specification you read; it is a set of records you collect. Ask for the four numbers per plate and the factory either has them or it does not.
In practice the terms are used interchangeably for the same product family: a vitreous enamel coating fused to steel plate at high temperature. You will also see vitreous enamel lined, glass lined and porcelain enamel used for the same technology. What matters is not the label but the measurable properties - thickness, holiday test voltage, adhesion and hardness - and the records that go with them.
A properly manufactured and properly maintained tank is commonly designed for a service life of 30 years or more, with many installations exceeding it. Whether that is achieved depends on both sides: the manufacturer sets the ceiling through coating quality and structural design, and the owner determines whether it is reached through foundation settlement control, vent and overflow maintenance, external protection of the bottom courses, bolt torque and, importantly, avoiding uncontrolled field cutting or welding.
Small defects can be repaired with a qualified two-part epoxy or a manufacturer-approved repair system after proper surface preparation, and the repair should be holiday tested. What must be avoided is field welding or cutting through the finished coating, which destroys the bond locally and cannot be repaired to the original standard. Plan all penetrations before manufacture.
