Send the same one-line enquiry - 2,000 cubic metres of potable water storage - to five suppliers and you will receive five quotes that differ by more than the spread in their prices. One includes the foundation, one excludes it. One quotes 3 mm shell plate because it assumed a low tank, one quotes 5 mm because it assumed a tall one. One has NSF/ANSI 61 certification on the coating, one has never heard of it. None of it is dishonest; the enquiry simply left every variable open, and each supplier filled the gaps with its own defaults.

1. Why Do Water Tank Quotes Arrive Impossible to Compare?

Because an open enquiry leaves four variables undefined: liquid, geometry, standard and scope. Liquid determines coating and certification - potable water needs a coating certified to NSF/ANSI 61 or WRAS, raw water does not, and fire water sits somewhere in between. Geometry drives plate thickness and foundation load: a 2,000 cubic metre tank at 6 m high has a very different shell and ring beam from the same volume at 12 m. 2. What Must the Enquiry Contain?

3. How Do You Read a Supplier's Reply?

Read the assumptions before the price. A good quote states the design code, the plate thicknesses by course, the coating system with its dry film thickness or fired thickness, the certification with its scope, the foundation load it expects, and what is excluded. Then check three things: whether the coating is applied and tested under the supplier's own control, whether the structural design was calculated for your stated loads or copied from a standard drawing, and whether the company that quotes is the company that will manufacture. Suppliers who cannot answer the second question are selling a catalogue, not an engineered tank.

  • Assumptions Before Price: If the quote does not state the design loads and code, it is not comparable to one that does.
  • Coating Under Own Control: Ask who applies and tests the coating. A supplier who subcontracts the critical process cannot give you furnace records.
  • Calculated, Not Copied: Ask for the shell thickness calculation against your wind and seismic values. Standard drawings fail at non-standard sites.
