Product Description

Aluminum Dome Roof for Raw Water Tanks: Keeping Light, Algae and Debris Out

Raw water is the one stored liquid that is deliberately untreated, and that is exactly what makes it difficult to store. It arrives carrying whatever the catchment or the river carried - sediment, organic matter, nutrients, sometimes a biological load - and then it stands. Given light, warmth and time, it grows. A covered tank and an uncovered tank holding the same water can arrive at the treatment plant with very different work to do, and the difference starts at the roof.

An aluminium geodesic dome is the usual answer for this duty, and not because it is the cheapest cover. It is chosen because it spans the whole tank without internal columns, because it does not corrode in the permanently damp, warm space above open water, and because it blocks the light that algae need. Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel) manufactures aluminium geodesic dome roofs for bolted and welded tanks, with clear spans that avoid internal supports altogether.

1. Why Cover Raw Water at All?

A roof on a raw water tank is a treatment decision rather than a structural one. It reduces what grows in the water, keeps out what would otherwise fall in, and lowers the load on every process downstream.

  • Light Exclusion: Algae need light to photosynthesise. An opaque roof removes the energy source, which is the single most effective step against biological growth in stored raw water.
  • Debris and Contamination: Leaves, dust, insect and bird ingress all add organic load and biological contamination. A sealed roof keeps the tank's contents limited to what was pumped in.
  • Evaporation Loss: In hot and windy climates an open tank loses a meaningful volume to evaporation. A roof recovers that water and keeps the stored volume predictable.
  • Downstream Chemical Demand: Less algae and less organic debris means lower coagulant and disinfectant demand at the treatment plant, and fewer disinfection by-products to manage.
  • Safety and Security: A roof closes off an open water surface, which removes a drowning and unauthorised access risk and makes the site easier to secure.
2. What Makes Aluminium Right for This Duty?

The space under a raw water tank roof is warm, permanently humid and often carries a faint chlorine or sulphide note. That is a poor environment for painted carbon steel and a very good one for aluminium, which forms its own protective oxide and needs no coating.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Aluminium does not rust. In the continuously damp vapour space above raw water it holds up without a paint system that would need periodic renewal.
  • No Coating to Maintain: Because the material protects itself, there is no internal repainting cycle, no scaffolding inside a confined tank, and no outage for roof coating work.
  • Light Weight: An aluminium dome weighs a fraction of a comparable steel roof, which reduces the load on the shell and the foundation and simplifies lifting during erection.
  • Clear Span Geometry: The triangulated geodesic structure carries load efficiently, so the dome spans the full diameter without internal columns that would obstruct mixing or cleaning.
  • Long Service with Little Attention: The combination of material and geometry gives a roof that is essentially maintenance free, which matters on remote or unmanned sites.
3. What Should the Specification Include?

A dome is a structural element and a process element at the same time. The specification has to cover the loads it will see, the penetrations it must accept, and the way it seals to the shell.

  • Design Loads: Wind uplift, snow, seismic and any maintenance live load must be stated for the actual site. Domes are light, so wind uplift is usually the governing case.
  • Interface with the Shell: The sealing detail between dome and tank is where leaks and corrosion start. The connection should be designed for the shell type and the movement it will see.
  • Penetrations and Access: Manways, vents, level instrumentation, inlet and outlet arrangements and any mixer penetrations all pass through the roof and must be detailed, not improvised.
  • Ventilation and Drainage: The vapour space needs to breathe without admitting light, and any condensation at the underside should be able to drain rather than drip into the water.
  • Material Contact Compliance: Where the stored water is destined for drinking, components in contact with it should carry the relevant approval, such as NSF/ANSI 61 or WRAS.
Design Consideration Open or Steel-Roofed Tank Aluminum Geodesic Dome
Algae control Full daylight drives growth in stored raw water Opaque cover removes the light that photosynthesis needs
Internal obstruction Steel roofs may need internal columns Clear span removes columns entirely, aiding mixing and cleaning
Vapour space corrosion Painted steel needs periodic renewal in damp air Aluminium forms its own oxide and needs no coating
Dead load on shell Heavier roof loads the shell and foundation Light structure reduces load and simplifies lifting
Maintenance cycle Internal repainting requires confined space outage Essentially maintenance free for the roof structure
Engineering Assurance and Project Support

Every tank delivered by Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel) is engineered against AWWA D103-09 and EN 1090 with finite element verification of shell, roof and nozzle loads, fused at 820-930°C under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 control, holiday tested at 1500 V across one hundred percent of the surface, and assembled with Grade 8.8 bolts and manufacturer-certified sealant. Domes are engineered for the site's wind, snow and seismic conditions, fabricated in corrosion resistant aluminium alloy with a triangulated clear-span structure, sealed to the shell with a designed interface detail, supplied with manways, screened vents and instrument penetrations, and documented with structural calculations, erection drawings and material certification, with potable contact components available to NSF/ANSI 61 or WRAS.

"Raw water does not need treatment while it is stored. It needs to be kept in the dark and left alone."
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why is a roof necessary on a raw water tank?

It is primarily a treatment measure. Excluding light stops algae growth, a sealed cover keeps out leaves, dust and animals, and both together reduce the organic load arriving at the treatment plant - which lowers coagulant and disinfectant demand and reduces disinfection by-product formation.

Can an aluminum dome span a large tank without internal columns?

Yes, and that is the principal advantage of the geodesic geometry. The triangulated structure carries load efficiently enough to clear the full diameter, which leaves the interior free for mixers, cleaning equipment and inspection access.

Does an aluminum roof need painting or coating?

No. Aluminium forms a stable protective oxide film, so it does not rust and does not need a paint system. That removes the internal repainting cycle a painted steel roof would require, which is significant because roof coating work inside a tank is a confined space operation.

Can a dome be customized to our tank and climate?

Yes. Span, rise, alloy and section, design loads, access and penetration layout, vent screening, sealing detail and any potable contact approvals are all configured to the tank geometry, the stored water and the local wind, snow and seismic conditions.
