A chilled water thermal storage (TES) tank looks like a simple box of water, but the manufacturer's job is to make it behave like a precision hydraulic device. The performance lives in the thermocline, the diffuser, and the usable temperature difference, not in the steel. This article covers what a chilled water TES tank manufacturer must engineer to deliver real storage.
A chilled water TES tank manufacturer engineers four parameters that decide performance: a wide usable delta-T (typically a 5-10 C swing in chilled-water systems, set by your chiller and coil tolerance) to maximize storage per cubic meter, a diffuser that introduces water at near-layer temperature and low velocity to preserve the thermocline, a height-to-diameter ratio that favors stratification, and low heat ingress through insulation and roof. We delivered a 30,549 m3 chilled process water tank in Sardinia, Italy (2025) with an enamel and membrane roof, which is analogous evidence of our ability to build large stratified coated storage, not a TES or data-center project.
Stored cooling equals volume times usable delta-T times water properties. Widening the allowable supply-temperature swing stores more per cubic meter and shrinks the tank, but the limit is your chiller and coil tolerance, so set delta-T from the cooling system, not from a rule of thumb. A manufacturer should model this with you, not guess.
The diffuser is the component that turns a tank into a stratified store. It introduces water across a large area at low velocity, matched to the layer temperature, so layers do not mix. A poor diffuser collapses the thermocline and the tank behaves like a mixed, smaller-volume vessel. The manufacturer must design, not bolt on, the diffuser.
Taller, narrower tanks stratify better because the thermocline area is small relative to volume, while a squat tank loses more to sidewall. Insulation, roof, and a sealed shell limit heat gain that would erode the thermocline. Our Singapore buffer tank (3,462 m3, 2020) is a smaller analogous stratified-storage reference.
The lining is not just corrosion control, it keeps stored water clean so biological growth does not disturb stratification. GFS or FBE gives an inert, holiday-tested surface; stainless suits compact or high-purity loops. The lining choice follows the water chemistry, confirmed against a chemical-resistance list.
We have no chilled water TES or data-center project in this library. The coated and process tanks cited (Sardinia 30,549 m3, Singapore 3,462 m3) are analogous industrial deliveries, not TES or data-center projects, offered as evidence of our large stratified-tank engineering.

The widest allowable supply-temperature swing your chiller and coil tolerate, commonly a 5-10 C swing; wider delta-T stores more per cubic meter.
It introduces water at near-layer temperature at low velocity, preserving the thermocline; a poor diffuser mixes the tank and effectively shrinks usable volume.
Generally yes: a taller, narrower tank has a smaller thermocline area relative to volume than a squat one.
Indirectly. A clean, inert lining (GFS or FBE) prevents biological growth that could disturb stratification and keeps stored water usable.
Enough to keep heat ingress from eroding the thermocline over the storage cycle; the exact level follows climate and cycle length.
Not in our project library. We cite large coated and process tanks at other clients as analogous capability, not TES or data-center deliveries.
A chilled water TES tank performs as a hydraulic device, not just a box of water. Maximize usable delta-T from your cooling system, design a diffuser that protects the thermocline, favor a taller height-to-diameter ratio, and limit heat ingress through insulation and roof, while a clean inert lining keeps biology from disturbing stratification. The manufacturer's value is in these four parameters and the diffuser, not in the brand of steel, because that is what turns a tank into efficient cooling storage.
