A data center is a water-intensive facility in three different ways: makeup water replaces evaporative loss in cooling towers, chilled water carries the cooling, and fire water protects the asset. Each role needs a different tank design, lining, and standard, and sourcing them from one Chinese manufacturer can simplify the program. This article maps the three roles and how to specify each.
A data center needs three water tank roles, and a Chinese tank manufacturer can supply all three as coated bolted tanks. Makeup water is clean treated water stored for cooling-tower top-up, sized by evaporation, drift, and blowdown; chilled water is the closed or open loop that carries cooling, often as a stratified TES or buffer; fire water follows NFPA 22 for a dedicated reserve. We have no data-center project in this library; we cite analogous water tanks we delivered, the 21,088 m3 Cilincing drinking-water tank in Indonesia (2024), the 652 m3 Dubai fire-water tank (2025), and the 30,549 m3 Sardinia process-water tank in Italy (2025), none of which are data-center projects.
Cooling towers lose water to evaporation, drift, and blowdown, and the makeup tank stores treated water to replace it automatically. It is clean-water storage, so an inert GFS or FBE lining keeps it usable, but it is typically non-potable, so NSF/ANSI 61 potable certification is not the governing requirement unless the water is potable. Size follows local evaporation rate and the blowdown schedule.
The chilled loop carries cooling and may include a stratified TES tank or a buffer. It needs an inert, sealed lining and, for open towers, resistance to treatment chemistry. The Sardinia process-water tank (30,549 m3, 2025) is a large coated chilled-process reference, not a data-center project.
Fire water is a dedicated reserve governed by NFPA 22, sized for the sprinkler and hydrant demand and kept separate from process. The Dubai fire-water tank (652 m3, 2025) and the Indonesia Cilincing drinking-water tank (21,088 m3, 2024) are reserve and large water tanks we delivered for other critical sites, analogous evidence, not data-center projects.
Sourcing all three from one Chinese manufacturer with in-house GFS/FBE coating and flat-pack export simplifies QA and logistics, but each tank must be specified to its own standard and duty. The table contrasts the three roles.
| Role | Standard focus | Lining |
| Makeup | Treated water | GFS/FBE inert |
| Chilled | AWWA/ISO | GFS/FBE sealed |
| Fire | NFPA 22 | GFS/FBE robust |
We have no data-center water tank in this library. The drinking, fire, and process tanks cited (Cilincing 21,088 m3, Dubai 652 m3, Sardinia 30,549 m3) are analogous critical-infrastructure deliveries, not data-center projects, offered as evidence of our ability to build large coated water tanks.
Makeup water for cooling-tower top-up, chilled water that carries cooling, and fire water as a dedicated NFPA 22 reserve.
Usually not, because makeup water is typically non-potable treated water for cooling towers; NSF/ANSI 61 applies only if the water is potable-grade.
Yes, a Chinese manufacturer with in-house GFS/FBE coating and flat-pack export can supply all three, but each tank must be specified to its own standard and duty.
NFPA 22 for the dedicated fire-water reserve, sized for sprinkler and hydrant demand and kept separate from process water.
Not necessarily; chilled water is the cooling loop, which may include a stratified TES tank or a buffer, but the loop exists even without storage.
Not in our project library. We cite drinking, fire, and process water tanks at other clients as analogous capability, not data-center deliveries.
A data center needs three water tank roles, makeup, chilled, and fire, and each demands a different design, lining, and standard, so specifying them correctly matters more than buying them from one source. Makeup water is clean non-potable storage sized by evaporation and blowdown, chilled water carries cooling often as a TES or buffer, and fire water is a dedicated NFPA 22 reserve. Sourcing all three from one Chinese manufacturer with in-house coating simplifies QA, but each tank must still be specified to its own duty, and we present our drinking, fire, and process tanks as analogous evidence, not data-center deliveries, because our library holds no data-center project.
