A thermal energy storage (TES) tank manufacturer is not just a fabricator of steel panels, it is a coating house, a structural designer, and a logistics operator at once. The difference between a tank that lasts 30 years and one that leaks at year five is mostly in what the manufacturer controls in-house. This article describes what a serious TES tank manufacturer must actually deliver.
The lining decides service life, so the manufacturer should own the coating process rather than subcontracting it blind. Glass-fused-to-steel is fired at 820-930 C to fuse a glass layer to steel; fusion-bonded-epoxy is applied as a factory-controlled powder coat. Both need holiday testing and a documented chemical-resistance list per project.
A TES tank is a wind and seismic structure as much as a vessel. The manufacturer must design to AWWA D103 and ISO 28765, with calculations for shell, anchor, and foundation loads, and confirm the governing standard for your site. For pressurized TES, ASME Section VIII and the U-stamp scope are confirmed per project.
Quality is provable only through records. Require material mill certificates, coating holiday-test reports, hydrostatic test records, and erection torque verification as standard deliverables, not exceptions. A manufacturer that cannot produce these on past projects will not produce them for yours.
Large TES tanks ship as coated panels and erect locally, which compresses schedule and protects coating quality versus field painting. Confirm the manufacturer can pack efficiently, document customs, and support local crews or your EPC. Our Thailand project was erected by 6 people in 12 days, illustrating the schedule compression.
We have no TES or data-center project in this library. The large coated tanks we cite (Sardinia 30,549 m3, Namibia 67,380 m3) are analogous industrial and utility deliveries, not TES or data-center projects, offered as evidence of our in-house coating and manufacturing depth.
| Capability | What to require | Why it matters |
| Coating | In-house GFS/FBE | Life-limiting item |
| Design | AWWA/ISO calcs | Wind/seismic safety |
| QA | Full record set | Proves the build |
| Delivery | Flat-pack + local | Schedule protection |
Glass-fused-to-steel (fired 820-930 C) or fusion-bonded-epoxy, both holiday-tested with a documented chemical-resistance list for your water chemistry.
Preferably yes, because the lining limits tank life; in-house control beats subcontracted blind coating for consistency and QA.
AWWA D103 and ISO 28765 for bolted water tanks, with wind and seismic calculations; ASME Section VIII where the tank is a pressure vessel.
Material certificates, coating holiday-test reports, hydrostatic test records, and erection torque verification as standard.
As coated flat-pack panels erected locally, which protects coating quality and compresses schedule versus field painting.
Not in our project library. We cite large coated tanks at other clients as analogous capability, not TES or data-center deliveries.
A serious thermal energy storage tank manufacturer controls the things that decide tank life and schedule: in-house GFS or FBE coating, structural design to AWWA D103 and ISO 28765, a retained QA package, and a flat-pack global delivery model. Subcontracting the lining or lacking calculation and test records is the difference between a 30-year asset and an early failure. Verify the coating process and the records before you verify the price, because the engineering, not the steel, is what you are actually buying.
