Food Industry wastewater Treatment
Wastewater from agricultural and food production has distinct characteristics that distinguish it from common municipal wastewater managed by public or private wastewater treatment plants around the world: it is biodegradable and non-toxic, but has high concentrations of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). ) and suspended solids (SS). [1] The composition of food and agricultural wastewater is often unpredictable due to differences in BOD and pH in wastewater from vegetable, fruit, and meat products, as well as food processing and post-harvest seasonality.
Processing food from raw materials requires large amounts of high-quality water. Washing vegetables produces water with a lot of particulate matter and some dissolved organics. It may also contain surfactants.
Animal slaughtering and processing produces very strong organic wastes from bodily fluids such as blood and intestinal contents. This wastewater is often contaminated with large quantities of antibiotics and growth hormones from animals and various pesticides used to control external parasites. Insecticide residues in wool are a particular problem in dealing with water produced during wool processing.
Processing food for sale creates waste from cooking, which is often rich in plant organic material and may also contain salts, flavourings, colouring materials and acids or bases. Very large amounts of oil or fat may also be present.
