Stainless steel tanks for Anaerobic digestion (AD) in biogas production
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the decomposition of organic matter, which naturally produces materials (also called biomass) and microorganisms without oxygen. The process produces biogas, which can then be burned to produce heat. Alternatively, it can be fed into a combined heat and power (CHP) generator to generate heat and electricity or it can be cleaned and used at the same time as natural gas or as vehicle fuel. The remaining materials are digested and are called digests, which can be used as fertilizers and soil amendments. One of the airtight tanks is called a biological digester (also known as an anaerobic digester or fermentation tank).
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a mature renewable energy process where biomass is broken down and converted into biogas production (a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide and trace other gases) produced by microorganisms. The environment in the biodigester is very complicated, depending on the composition of the raw materials and operating conditions, and some by-products are corrosive to certain structural materials. It is vital to minimize maintenance, because every time the AD process is interrupted, it takes 3-4 weeks to restart production. Stainless steel is an ideal biogas tank material because of its inherent corrosion resistance, and because it is strong and easy to manufacture. The materials available in the range of stainless steel grades can make cost-effective material selections, resulting in trouble-free performance throughout the life of the biodigester.
