Bolted steel tanks occupy a position that is often misunderstood. Because they arrive as plates and are assembled on site, they are sometimes assumed to be a lighter-duty alternative to welded construction. In practice the opposite is true for most liquid applications: the coating is applied and tested under factory conditions rather than in the weather, the vessel can be built to any practical diameter without a transport ceiling, and it can be dismantled, extended or relocated. The trade-off is that the quality of the finished tank depends heavily on the supplier's engineering discipline, because the assembly happens where the supplier's own workforce usually is not.
That is the real reason supplier selection matters more here than for welded tanks. Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel) has manufactured bolted tanks since 2008, holds close to two hundred enamelling patents, and has delivered vessels from small community supplies to single tanks above 30,000 cubic metres. The four questions below are the ones that reliably separate suppliers who will still be supporting the tank in year fifteen from those who will not.
The coating is the tank. A supplier who buys in plates and coats them elsewhere, or who cannot produce furnace records, is asking the buyer to accept the single most important variable on trust.
A bolted tank is assembled from hundreds of components on someone else's site, and the engineering that makes that possible happens before anything ships. Suppliers who only fabricate tend to deliver a kit and a drawing, and the risk transfers to the buyer.
The most common source of disappointment in bolted tank projects is not the tank. It is the discovery at site that the erection equipment, the supervision or the manual was not included in the scope.
| Supplier Question | Strong Answer | Warning Sign |
|---|---|---|
| Do you own the coating process? | Own furnace, 820-930 degrees C, records available | Brochure claims without furnace data |
| What is tested, and how much? | 100 percent holiday at 1500 V, adhesion and thickness in the ITP | Sampling, or tests described only in marketing |
| How is the tank engineered? | FEA to AWWA D103-09 or EN 1090, site-specific load cases | Standard drawings with no project engineering |
| What erection support is included? | Jacking system, supervisor, manual and commissioning | Kit of plates and a general arrangement drawing |
| Are there comparable references? | Similar diameter and duty, contactable, several years in service | Only small or unrelated references |
Every tank delivered by Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd. (Center Enamel) is engineered against AWWA D103-09 and EN 1090 with finite element verification of shell, roof and nozzle loads, fused at 820-930°C under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 control, holiday tested at 1500 V across one hundred percent of the surface, and assembled with Grade 8.8 bolts and manufacturer-certified sealant. Tanks are engineered against AWWA D103-09 and EN 1090 under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001, fused at 820-930 degrees Celsius, holiday tested at 1500 V across one hundred percent of the surface, and delivered with general arrangement drawings, plate and nozzle schedules, the jacking system, an erection manual and supervisor support through to hydrostatic testing and handover.
For liquid storage duties, yes, when they are engineered to the same code. The design is verified against AWWA D103-09 or EN 1090 for the same load cases, including wind and seismic. The difference is not strength but construction method, and bolted construction brings advantages in coating quality, transportability and future modification.
Erection is substantially faster than welded construction because there is no site welding, no post-weld inspection and no site coating. A standard delivery period of around thirty days applies to manufacture, and on-site erection for a mid-sized tank is typically a matter of days to a few weeks depending on scale and crew experience.
Yes. Additional courses can be added to increase height within the original design envelope, additional tanks can be tied into an existing system, and a bolted tank can be dismantled and rebuilt on another foundation - which matters on leased sites or where capacity plans change.
Yes. Diameter, height, coating system, roof type, penetration layout, access and instrumentation are all engineered to the project. Provide the duty, capacity, site conditions and applicable code and the tank is designed to match.
