Leachate and condensate from landfills may contain hazardous components that may be the direct result of waste disposed of at the facility (e.g., household hazardous waste) or the breakdown of chemical compounds found in the waste (e.g. , leachate-derived components).

This tank construction technique can be described using a variety of terms, including GFS tank (GFtS), enamelled tank (ENA), and glass fused steel tank (enamel).
Leachate disposal tanks should always be durable. This means they must be resistant to corrosion, impact and wear. Despite this property of these tanks, the steel tank material used is inherently susceptible to corrosion due to oxidation in aerobic tanks. If infiltration occurs in the leachate aeration pond, the rate at which corrosion ponds develop into leaks at exposed points of damaged steel can be surprising despite the near-neutral pH.
