Cost-Efficient Anaerobic Digestion & Biogas Tanks


Anaerobic digestion is widely used as a renewable energy source. The process produces biogas consisting of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and trace amounts of other "polluting" gases. This biogas can be used directly in cogeneration gas engines or upgraded to natural gas-quality biomethane. A nutrient-rich biogas residue is also produced that can be used as fertilizer.

Feedstock for an anaerobic digester can come from sources such as animal manure, food processing waste, industrial wastewater processes, and municipal wastewater treatment processes—virtually any source that contains digestible organic waste. Anaerobic digester output

Anaerobic digestion produces two valuable products: biogas and digestate.



Biogas is composed of methane (CH4), the main components of natural gas, carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), water vapor, and trace amounts of other substances, with a relatively high proportion (50% to 75%) of methane (CH4) gas. The energy in biogas can be used like natural gas to provide heat, generate electricity and power cooling systems, among other things. Biogas can also be purified by removing inert or low-value components (CO2, water, H2S, etc.) to produce renewable natural gas (RNG). This can be sold and injected into natural gas distribution systems, compressed and used as vehicle fuel, or further processed to produce alternative transportation fuels, energy products or other advanced biochemicals and bioproducts.

Digestate is the leftover material left after the digestion process. It consists of liquid and solid parts. These are often separated and processed independently, as each has value that can be realized with varying degrees of post-processing.


With proper processing, both the solid and liquid fractions of the digestate can be used in many beneficial applications such as animal bedding (solid), nutrient-rich fertilizers (liquid and solid), the basis for bio-based products such as bioplastics material), organic-rich compost (solids), and/or simply as a soil amendment (solids), the latter of which may involve farms spreading digests over fields as fertilizer. Biogas residue products can be a source of revenue or cost savings and are often used to increase the financial and net environmental benefits of AD/biogas projects.
