Sludge, viscous ooze or other viscous liquids are often by-products of wastewater treatment; industrial wastewater solids and settled suspensions from drinking water treatment are treated as hazardous waste. It often contains various types of pathogens as well as heavy metal contaminants and, in the case of industrial waste, chemical contaminants. Sludge contaminated with chemical pollutants or heavy metals requires complex treatment.

 

Reducing the volume of sludge and its toxicity to a more convenient form of disposal is the goal of various treatment processes. Stabilization, drying, incineration, concentration and dewatering are some of the basic sludge treatment methods. Due to fuel prices and the necessary disposal of combustion gases, drying and incineration are prohibitively expensive in most cases.
