The main wastewater associated with mines and quarries is the slurry of rock particles in the water. These come from rainwater washing exposed surfaces and haul roads, but also from rock washing and grading processes. Water volumes can be very high, especially in relation to rainfall on large sites. Some specialized separation operations, such as coal washing to separate coal from natural rock using a density gradient, produce wastewater contaminated with fine-grained hematite and surfactants. Oil and hydraulic fluids are also common contaminants. Wastewater from metal mines and ore recovery plants is inevitably contaminated with minerals present in natural rock formations. After the comminution and extraction of the desired material, the undesired material may enter the wastewater stream. For metal ores, this may include unwanted metals such as zinc and other materials such as arsenic. Extraction of high-value metals such as gold and silver can produce slimes containing very fine particles, where physical removal of contaminants becomes particularly difficult. In addition, geological formations containing economically valuable metals such as copper and gold are often composed of sulfide ores. The processing involves grinding the rock into fine particles and then extracting the desired metals, and the remaining rock is called tailings. These tailings contain not only undesired residual metals, but also sulfide components that eventually form sulfuric acid when exposed to air and water, which is unavoidable when the tailings are disposed of in large ponds will happen.
