Product Description

geodesic dome Roof VS Geodesic dome cone roof

The steel cone roof and aluminum geodesic dome are designed for maximum weather tightness, thus combining ecological aspects with economic benefits. Preventing stored products from being contaminated by natural elements such as snow, rain, sand and other foreign bodies is still an important factor today. The question is what are the long-term benefits and whether the owner will get a return on investment because this is a factory asset.

Roof gutter

In severe rainy seasons, hurricanes and severe snow seasons, many roof drainage systems with carbon steel open-top storage tanks have drainage problems. Since the geodesic dome is spherical, there is no need for a drainage system, and there is no need to worry about your floating roof sinking into your product.

Self-supporting clear span

The inherent geodesic dome has an excellent strength-to-span ratio. It is self-supporting, which allows the dome to span large areas without the need for structural support columns. Over the years, increased storage requirements for oil and natural gas products have led to an increase in the size of storage tanks. The advantage of the clear span self-supporting aluminum geodesic dome is that it can eliminate the pillars required for typical steel cone roof installations. The columns are emission risk points. By removing them, your tank can obtain emission credits from local governments and international environmental agencies.

wind

According to API 2517, evaporation loss is a function of wind speed in EFR. However, the geodesic dome prevents evaporation losses by deflecting the wind above the dome, eliminating the vortex effect of wind passing through the top of the dome by an EFR. As it reduces emissions, it also helps control odors.

load

The design strength of the dome allows it to handle the additional load, and the IFR is suspended from the dome roof. This modification can increase the overall usable capacity of the tank. Consider and calculate any additional required loads such as snow, wind and other possible loads during the design phase of the dome. It also provides maintenance advantages.

maintain

The ability to suspend the IFR from the top allows the removal of the IFR legs, which determine the lowest possible point in the tank. Since there are no legs, you can set a reasonable maintenance roof level above the floor, which will alleviate the difficulty of equipment entering/exiting the tank during the shutdown period.

corrosion

Geodesic domes generally require less maintenance than steel cone roofs. It is corrosion-resistant, and no corrosion means less debris enters the secondary sealing system and will create holes that can cause discharge leaks. There is no need for time-consuming maintenance procedures, and the underside of the steel cone roof is sandblasted and painted during the period of non-use. In addition, the top of the steel cone roof must be sandblasted, repaired and coated to prevent corrosion damage to the roof surface.

Anti-corrosion coating

The geodesic dome does not need to be painted for corrosion protection, a natural oxidation process occurs, forming a thin protective layer over time. This is a huge cost-saving and increases the return on investment (ROI) over the life of the tank.

Thermal effect

The aluminum geodesic dome has excellent reflection characteristics to polished aluminum, and it can protect the stored products from the effects of ultraviolet rays and weather, thereby making the products cooler. By covering the open-top EFR storage tank, emissions are reduced due to direct exposure to the sun, thereby lowering the overall product temperature. The dome installed on the EFR can reduce emissions by more than 90%.

weight

The geodesic dome is a light structure. Compared with the self-supporting steel cone roof, the weight of the geodesic dome is about or less. For new tanks, lightweight can save the cost of foundation and tank shell. Due to the light weight of the dome, it is also suitable for retrofitting existing storage tanks, which were originally designed to operate without a roof. (Picture 11)

Install

The advantage of the geodesic dome is that it can be installed while the tank is in use. It can be built on the ground next to the tank, or even on the EFR, and then hoisted in place by a crane. The construction of the geodesic dome does not require any high temperature work. It takes less time to complete, and customers can put the storage tank into service earlier than the time required to complete the steel cone that needs to be welded. An example shows that for an ADRT with IFR, the required labor demand is reduced by 68%-6880 man-hours and 21,930 man-hours. Approximately 40% of the installation time is completed by a low-skilled labor team. (Figure 12)

pressure

Unless the customer has different requirements, the internal design pressure should not exceed the weight of the roof. According to API 650 G.4.3 to 9 inches of water, the internal pressure of ADRT is limited. Tests have been performed on 26 inches of water, and petroleum applications can be used for 17 inches of water. The ability to control pressure is specific to the design and manufacturer.

Washer compatibility

A crucial aspect of geodesic domes to consider is the compatibility of the gasket with the product stored in the tank when the floating roof is not in use.

lightning

Due to the steel-to-steel contact, EFR storage tanks may accumulate potential charges and may become a potential source of ignition during lightning strikes. Many manufacturers believe that aluminum domed roofs really help provide a Faraday cage effect, even if the metal shell is very thin. If there are no combustible vapors in the atmosphere due to emissions, there should be little concern about lightning. There should be no reason to additionally protect the dome cover from exposure to the floating roof within the lightning, since the Faraday cage has been proven effective, but the coupling IS per API 650-H is required for other purposes. Aluminum does not carry static charge, does not produce sparks, and it dissipates atmospheric discharges.

The initial goal of the aluminum geodesic dome-covered storage tank is still an efficient and economical way to reduce maintenance and operating costs, but the recent motivation and market driver is to further reduce the VOC emissions associated with petroleum storage tanks.

There are many manufacturers in the world, and each manufacturer has its own unique proprietary design features that provide customers with specific benefits. Therefore, customers should take a structured approach to ensure that they choose the correct geodesic dome to provide the best value for the application.
