Aluminum Geodesic dome Roof design theory
The geodesic dome not only combines the strength of a solid sphere/arch shape but also consists of many triangles. The success of the dome as a structure is the result of the natural integrity of its shape. The dome uses the same curved shape as the arch. The only difference is that it uses tension to prevent it from spreading.
As we all know, a triangle is the strongest shape because it has a fixed angle, and it is the only artifact configuration that remains stable inside it without adding support at the intersection to prevent geometric deformation.
On the other hand, an arch is a three-dimensional structure that uses triangles like a sphere to create multiple load-bearing paths from the center of the vertex to the support point of the structure.
Pair the arches with equilateral triangles and isosceles triangles, and you will get an extremely durable structure called a geodesic dome. Therefore, if you apply pressure to one side of a triangle, the force will be evenly distributed to the other sides, and then the load will be transferred to the adjacent triangle. The triangle is crucial to the design strength of the dome. This force distribution is how effectively the geodesic dome spreads the stress along with the entire shape.
The design of the geodesic dome is a pentagonal or hexagonal shape inclined inward to form a spherical shape. Both hexagons and pentagons can be accurately divided into triangles, so they are inherently strong.
