Anaerobic digestion-create value from organic waste
Biogas production
Organic waste is one of the biggest global challenges we face. At the same time, mankind has been exploring new ways to reduce and recycle organic waste – almost all types of waste are looking for new solutions through the circular economy of different substances and nutrients. Similarly, more and more organic waste is converted into biogas, biogas residue, wastewater and other by-products through the use of anaerobic digestion. They can be used to make a variety of other products. In this article, we will get a closer look at the basic situation of the biogas industry and how it can help create value from organic waste.
What is biogas and anaerobic digestion?
Biogas is a gas mixture produced during anaerobic digestion. It is a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide and some trace gases. The composition of biogas may vary, but it usually contains about 60-65% methane and 30-35% carbon dioxide (volume ratio) and other gases. Biogas is produced by an anaerobic digestion (AD) process. The moisture content of the original gas when it leaves the biogas digester depends on the temperature of the bacteria processing process and the relative humidity in the biogas digester (usually 100%).
Anaerobic digestion process
The anaerobic digestion process is an enzyme-catalyzed process that requires anaerobic conditions and several microorganisms, each of which is indispensable in the entire process. Digestion starts with hydrolysis, breaking down proteins, carbohydrates and lipids into smaller molecular fragments. During the acidification process, these fragments are converted into volatile fatty acids, producing ammonia (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). During acetyl production, some volatile fatty acids are converted into acetic acid (CH3COOH), hydrogen (H2) and CO2. These substances are easily processed in the methanation stage, and the methane-producing bacteria use different biochemical processes to convert them into methane (CH4).
Why is biogas produced?
There are two reasons for biogas production: On the one hand, countries want to treat organic waste in an environmentally friendly way through anaerobic digestion and composting of organic waste and return the nutrients in the organic waste to agriculture; on the other hand, biogas is a kind of renewable Energy has a wide range of uses. The most common solution is to use a combined heat and power engine (CHP) for cogeneration in the AD pool. Now more and more biogas is purified and converted into biomethane, which can be distributed in natural gas pipeline networks or stored as liquefied natural gas. Biomethane can be used as one of the green energy alternatives to support the path of bio-carbon cycle.
Some researchers regard biogas production as a means of enrichment in rural areas, where organic waste is a natural renewable resource. Although in the long run, biogas production is only one step in our journey towards photosynthesis-based energy, it still has great potential and urgent needs in the coming decades, especially in solar and wind energy. Poor areas.
